Styling: Your Wedding Colour
Styling: Your Wedding Colour
Written by Rebecca Stewart, Visionary weddings
With any element of your Wedding there can be many contributing factors which go into planning the style or theme of your day. Colour is a great way to draw these plans together and give you focus when planning.
From Bridesmaids dresses to boutonniere, ceremony and reception décor, the choice of one colour can seamlessly move your guests visually from one part of the day to another. Selecting a central colour can be a difficult task, only Brides who have gone through this process can appreciate that it is not about closing your eyes and pointing at a colour wheel.
If you are lucky, you will have a favourite colour that you have always known will be the central pivot for designing your perfect wedding (if you’re more lucky your Groom will agree on it!) If you are having difficulty in selecting a central colour or theme, consider the use of colour within healing and psychology.
It is widely viewed that colour can create a feeling or impression and is used with this in mind frequently within Interior design, fashion and art. We consider the colours of our homes down to the very shade and tone to be used, why not use the same enthusiasm when creating your perfect Wedding day? Each colour has a specific meaning and feeling attached, an overview of common wedding colours is below to give you a starting point.
Light Blue - healing, hapiness, patience
Dark blue - change
Green - fertility, growth, money, envy
Orange - energy, stimulation
Pink - friendship, love
Purple - healing, meditation, spiritualism
Red - courage, passion, health, protection, strength
Yellow - attraction, intellect, study
White - protection, purification, peace
Once you have selected your colour how do you use this to create your theme?
Creating a colour or mood board is a great way to get your creative juices flowing. Using your colour as inspiration select images from magazines, colour chips from your local paint shop, fabric swatches and anything else you can think of. The inspirations that you select don’t have to be Wedding related, they are images which represent your feelings about the day.
Place everything that you have collected together into a notebook, you can look through this when you are in need of inspiration and ideas, when you are speaking to your venue coordinator or wedding stylist.
There are so many ways in which your selected colour can be used to decorate your big day and can be in one specific shade in areas you would like to create an accent of or in varying tones and shades throughout. At your ceremony, your colour can be used in tying together the Bridal Party outfits, delicate chair sashes or aisle decorations. The options for your reception are just about as endless as the potential venues themselves. Table centrepieces atop layered runners with coordinating sashes can be used to extend the theme and coloured lighting can create a beautifully soft ambience – imagine your venue walls draped in fabric and lit softly with the colour of choice.
